Saving Thousands of Lives

By Robert  Sumwalt

“The automobile industry has been motivated to innovate by growing evidence that existing technologies like the antilocking braking systems and electronic stability control have saved tens of thousands of lives.” That was in an article on motor vehicle safety technology on page 1 of The New York Times on Saturday. Yes, there is growing evidence of new technology’s tremendous safety benefits, which is why last November the NTSB put Mandate Motor Vehicle Collision Avoidance Technologies on our Most Wanted List. The article highlighted the great research being done and the applications being introduced by manufacturers, including Audi, BMW, Mercedes and Volvo.

Robert L. Sumwalt was sworn in as the 37th Member of the National Transportation Safety Board on August 21, 2006. He is a frequent contributor to the NTSB blog.
